Reading a Citation

Cases are found with a legal citation.

Citations have three parts:

  • volume number
  • title of a report (governmental collection of cases) or reporter (private publisher collection of cases)
  • page number

For instance, Bush v. Gore, that decided the 2000 Presidential Election was made available in a wide variety of sources:

531 U.S. 98, 121 S. Ct. 525, 148 L. Ed. 2d 388

Let's take the following citation and break it down: 531 U.S. 98

  • 531 = volume 531
  • U.S. = United States Reports
  • 98 = page number 98
