COM 297: Communication Research Methods

Google Scholar

Google Scholar allows you to search only for scholarly peer-reviewed articles and materials without retrieving all websites on a topic. In Google Scholar, you can link to online full text of an article available through Milner Library by clicking the three lines in the upper left corner, then "Settings," then "Library Links" and searching and selecting "Illinois State University."  Milner Library's Find It @ ISU link will then appear with your Google Scholar search results.

Not all publications in the results list of a Google Scholar search will include access to online full text of the article or publication.  When there is no "Find It @ ISU" link or other link to online full text on the internet for a Google Scholar search result, search for the article citation using the Milner Library Citation Finder tab.

NOTE: Not all journals, magazines and newspapers are available at Milner Library with full text online.

If online full text of an article is not available, search Milner's Catalog for availability of print copy. In Milner's Catalog enter the journal title, change the type of search from "Keyword" to "Title" in the adjacent dropdown list, and check the "Journal/Magazine" box further down on the search page.

You may still request articles through interlibrary loan, but many libraries are not participating in Interlibrary Loan for the time being due to the COVID-19 pandemic, so there is no guarantee that you will be able to get the articles you request.

Google Books

Search Google Books for books about specific communication theories or topics.

When only a preview of a book is available, search Milner's Catalog for the book title and author.

If Milner does not own the book or Milner's copy is not available, search All I-Share Libraries for the book title and request the book from one of the 90 other I-Share Libraries at colleges and universities in Illinois.

NOTE: The new Milner Library/I-Share catalog does not require account creation. Login with your ULID and password.
