TCH 207 - Literacy Instruction in Culturally & Linguistically Diverse Middle Level Classrooms

Analysis of English Language Learner Materials

You will be in one of five groups that will each analyze a specific resource type from Milner Library for use with English language learners. The goal of this assignment is to expose you to applications for resources with English language learners. You will submit an individual worksheet of your analysis during the library instruction session, a group-created handout for your classmates, and a group presentation on your assigned topic.

Before Class

Read Translanguaging and Latinx Bilingual Readers by Ofelia Garcia BEFORE the class session at Milner Library.

In Class

Your work in class will be done using the English Language Learners Materials Exploration. You are in one of six groups: Hi-Lo books, graphic novels, books published in multiple languages, books which exhibit translanguaging, bilingual books, and novels in verse. In this exploration in class you will:

  1. Complete an individual analysis of an example of your material
  2. Meet with your group members and discuss your individual work in order to begin work on a group handout to share with your classmates.

After Class

  1. Finish any incomplete analysis from the individual and group work begun in class.
  2. Prepare a 10-minute group presentation for the rest of your class. Presentations will be held in class on a date yet to be determined.
