Examines the concept of deculturalization - the use of schools to strip away family languages and cultures and replace them with those of the dominant group.

The book primarily addresses European immigrants. Of particular interest may be chapter 7, Americanization, starting on page 191.

Useful because entries specifically address assimilation of individual ethnic groups. Contains 175 essays on specific minority and ethnic groups in the U.S., with an emphasis on culture (religions, holidays, customs, language) in addition to information on historical background and settlement patterns. The Encyclopedia also covers ethnoreligious groups such as Jews, Chaldeans, and Amish.

Of specific interest may be the chapters "Cultural Conflicts: Religion and Ethnicity" (page 104) and "Americanization: Match and Mismatch" (page 229). See index for various ethnic groups.

Covering American education from colonial times to the mid-1980s, the essays cover topics about women’s education, the education of minority groups, and the social dimensions of educational reform. Of particular interest is Chapter 13: The School Achievement of Immigrant Children: 1900-1930.
