Leveled Books

 What Is a Leveled Book?

A leveled book is merely a book that has been assigned a gradient for readability. The gradient may be:

  • a letter
  • a number
  • a grade equivalency

Leveled books may be:

  • written specifically for a publisher and part of their larger leveled book program
  • a well-known title that has been ranked for readability

Some (not all) of these can be located in catalog by searching under Genre: Readers (primary)

Includes thousands of titles that have been leveled for you. The alphabetical gradient is located in the front cover of the book and gives you a grade-level range for the ranking. (Front half of book: Books by Title; Last half of book: Books by Level)

***Not every book ever written is leveled in Fountas & Pinnell (F & P). You might have to use NoveList Plus or other tools to determine the readability of a title not found in F & P.

How to Determine Readability Level for a Book:

1. Go to the front half of The Fountas & Pinnell Leveled Book List K-8+ to find books by title and the corresponding level.

2. Search Milner's catalog to check if we have a particular title. Watch a video here to see how.

3. If a book isn't in Fountas & Pinnell, check NoveList Plus for a Lexile Level equivalent.

Leveled Book Comparison Chart

4. Search Milner's catalog to check if we have a particular title. Watch a video here to see how.

Hi Lo Books are High Interest and Low Readability. They are “different” in that they contain age appropriate content for middle level and secondary students, but are typically written between a 2nd  and 4th grade readability. We only have ONE series – the Bluford Series -- which comes with an accompanying TMC Pro Teacher’s Guide.

Leveled Books in the TMC Stacks

Many well known and popular books are written within the "A-- I" leveled book range, but are not in the leveled book bins. The catalog record for these  popular books will not include a Lexile number, but you can still identify this number by checking that same book within the database Novelist Plus.

Leveled Books: Programs and Resources

New titles for the leveled reader bins A -- I are currently being cataloged, and will be updated this summer. Below is a series of examples that are shelved in the Easy Book section, with links to the catalog record:

Certain publishers have leveled book programs created especially for them. These contain pre-leveled titles and are usually accompanied by a Teacher's Guide. Typically, they include book titles that are not "well-known" but are designed to be read quickly, easily and successfully by children who are learning to read.

Leveled book programs include multiple copies of titles (4-6 each) for use with guided reading/small groups. They may have a leveling system that is unique to that publisher.

The TMC has many titles contained within leveled book programs (these have a TMC Text call # prefix) located at the Leveled Book Station. We also have many of the Teacher's Guides for certain programs. We have cataloged them individually for ease in choosing a title or titles for the child with whom you are working. Use The Fountas & Pinnell Leveled Book List K-8+ of these books to determine the level compatible with the gradient system used uniformly by Fountas and Pinnell.

Leveled Books: Gradients and Locations

1. The call number will direct you to the book you've located in the catalog.

2. If the call # has a prefix of TMC Text, it will be located in a bin at the Leveled Reader Station in the TMC.

3. If the call # has a prefix of Easy, Fiction, or a number, it will be in the TMC stacks associated with that prefix.
