Research resources and tips for Prof. Krcmarik's course, Spring 2025

Topic Selection and Research Tips

Tips for researching under-represented designers and works:

  • It can be challenging to find information about some works. You may find that little has been written. But there are ways to work with this!
  • Choose a topic for which you can identify at least a few different examples or related concepts.
  • Test-search your ideas on the library website. This can give you an idea of how easy/hard they are to research, and can lead to more ideas.
  • If nothing comes up in the test searches, try to broaden your topic.
  • Revise and iterate as you learn more. Experiment with various search strategies or terms.
  • Research takes time. Get started early and keep working on it throughout the project.
  • If you are stuck, contact your professor or librarian for help.

Key questions to consider

Who was associated with this person, movement, or work?

Where was it made? Where did this creator(s) live and work? What kind of influence do you think that had?

When was the work made? What else was happening at that time?

How was the work made? What tools, materials, or technologies were available?

Why was the work made? What was the intent? What were the main messages?
