Browsing Books

What's on This Page?

This page will show you how to locate the Browsing Books in our catalog, as well as how you can find fiction in other areas of Milner's collection. There are additional sub-pages to showcase the various genres of our current Browsing Books, in both Fiction and Nonfiction.

How to Search the Catalog for Browsing Books in Fiction

The Browsing Books are located on Floor 2 of Milner Library, right next to the entrance doors. This collection is, unfortunately, not searchable within the catalog by traditional subject headings or genres the way that our regular books are. If you would like to search our catalog for browsing books, you can enter a title, author or simply type either  "browsing fiction" or "browsing nonfiction" as a keyword search.

How to Find Fiction Beyond the Browsing Books Collection

It is important to note that the Browsing Books contain just a small fraction of the fiction that is available elsewhere in the library. To see what books are available in a specific genre of fiction outside of the Browsing Book collection, try typing "fiction" into the search box. On the left side of the screen, you can click the box for "genre" and reveal a series of options to select.

You can also select "genre" from the drop-down menu of the search box itself. Limit your results even further by "Location" on the left sidebar of the screen. If you limit to "Floor 6 Shelves" you will be targeting adult fiction.  If you would rather focus on more YA titles  (Young Adult), limit your results to "Floor 6 Shelves Teaching Materials Center."

You may also encounter suggested search terms below the search box. In this example you can observe how some genres use a variety of terms: thriller fiction, suspense fiction, psychological fiction, etc.
