Research tips and resources for Prof. Smelser's class, Fall 2024

Getting Started: Researching Arts Professional Opportunities

  • Reflect on your goals. Where do you see yourself living? What is something you'd like to achieve in your first year or two after graduating? What resources will you need?
  • Search multiple resources. Look at a mix of international, national, regional, state, and local sources.
  • Scope out the professional organizations. They often list opportunities. Discounted student rates may be available to access member-exclusive resources.
  • Your networks are a valuable source. Consult with others in WKSOA, contact ISU's Career Center, ask visiting artists for advice, join online networks where artists tend to share professional information.
  • This guide is just a starting point! Ask your professor or librarian for additional input.
