IDS 107 - Summer Success Skills

This guide provides resources and information for IDS 107.

Activity One - Finding Credible Sources

Reggie Redbird has an assignment in his ENG 101 class to write a 5-7 page research paper.

He must use at least one peer-reviewed article and one book from Milner Library. The paper has to be formatted in APA Style and include a reference list.

Reggie has selected the impact of social media on the mental health of college students as his topic.

For this activity, you will break up in small teams and help Reggie out!

  • Each team will have a set of questions and tasks to complete.
  • Use the back of this worksheet to record your answers.

Team Article

Locate one peer reviewed article on Reggie’s topic. (hint on this page)

  1. What does peer review mean?
  2. Describe your process to find the article, include the search terms you used, where you searched, and how you know it’s peer-reviewed.
  3. Now that you’ve found an article, how would you send this to Reggie?

Team Book

Locate one book from Milner Library on Reggie’s topic. (hint on this page)

  1. Describe your process to find the book, include the search terms you used and where you searched.
  2. Why did you select this book for Reggie?
  3. How would you find this book to give to Reggie? If Reggie wanted to "browse" the library shelves for similar books, what should he do?

Team APA

Create an APA formatted reference of an article. (hint on this page)

  1. Why is it important to acknowledge the research you are using? Give 2-3 reasons.
  2. Using the listed article, help Reggie to format it for his reference list.
    1. Identify the parts of information you need for the reference.
    2. Find the article. What information is available on the article record for you to create the reference?

  3. If you need help with APA formatting, what tools and resources from Milner Library could you use? Is there anyone you could reach out to for help?
