Chapter 1, Part V: Introduction to Legal Citation

According to Legal Research, Analysis, and Writing, 4th edition:

"[Y]ou must include citations to the legal authorities you have identified.  Legal citation is akin to citation in other forms of writing in that it serves to alert the reader that the content is from another source and is not the author's own thoughts.  However, legal citation has the added task of demonstrating to the reader the strength of the law and whether a court is bound by the source cited (primary, mandatory authority versus persuasive authority." (p. 18)
