How to Search by Subject

Subject headings are specific terms used to find and organize books and articles by topic. They are different from keywords in that they are specific terms assigned to a subject by an organization. Most subject headings used in the library catalog come from the Library of Congress. These subjects can help you find relevant material on a specific topic. If you know a specific subject term or phrase, you can use Milner's catalog to search by subject to only find books linked to that phrase.

Subject Searching at Milner:

Start from Milner's search page and specify that you want to search through the library catalog. Also, change the search filter from "Keyword" to "Subject." Enter the subject phrase in the search box.

This will bring up a list of results that include that phrase in their subject lists. Clicking on a specific title will show the list of subjects associated with that title. Most items have more than one subject heading associated with it. Looking at available subjects will help you find similar information in subsequent searches.
