Database Searching Tips

Do both keyword and subject heading searches. You will get a variety of different results. While subject heading searching is typically more accurate, keyword searches will give you a broader overview of results.

Be prepared to change your keywords or subject headings as needed. You will likely not find one article that contains all your search terms. Be willing to do multiple searches with different sets of keywords or subject headings.

If you have a PICO question with different interventions and comparison interventions, you may need to search for each intervention separately rather than finding one article that contains both interventions.

After completing a search, filters can be used to limit results by language, date, age groups, etc.  Avoid using too many filters. The more filters you use, the fewer results you will get.

By using the "Publication Type" filter, you can limit search results to specific levels of evidence such as randomized controlled trials, clinical trials, or systematic reviews.

Avoid using the "full text" limiter. Do not check "full text" because you will miss out on strong articles. Instead, use the "Find It" button to locate full-text articles in Milner's online collection.
