1619: 400 Years of History

The 1619 Project, inaugurated with a special issue of The New York Times Magazine, challenges us to reframe U.S. history by marking the year when the first enslaved Africans arrived on Virginia soil as our nation's foundational date. Here you will find reading guides, activities, and other resources to bring The 1619 Project into your classroom.

Our digital curriculum was developed by teachers, for teachers, and contains all relevant links and materials to integrate the history and themes of 1619 into your classroom.

Visualizing Emancipation is a compelling resource for teaching the end of slavery. Here you’ll find resources for using the site. The creators especially encourage college instructors and upper-level high school teachers to contact them about designing assignments around primary sources that students can upload and map through the site. In addition, they have lesson plans geared toward K-12 classrooms and events that teachers and students may find of particular interest.

Tolerance.org has created this project in collaboration with other institutions to develop lesson plans and learning plans that address tough issues, such as slavery, inequities, and social justice.

The Library of Congress has prepared a section of lesson plans about African American history that use primary sources from their collections to talk about topics such as slavery, the Civil War, Reconstruction, and segregation. Links to sources used in the lessons are provided.
