Individuals with Disabilities Education Act

Many of the resources you encounter for this course will reference the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. The U.S. Department of Education's IDEA site provides an introduction to the statute, regulations and other resources.

IDEA has the following citations:

  • Public Law: PL 108-446
  • U.S. Statutes at Large: 118 Stat 2647
  • United States Code: 20 USC §1400

To read the code, you can do so on the IDEA website or search 20 USC 1400 on Westlaw.

If you search on Westlaw, this will take you to the beginning of the text.

To maneuver between sections, you can click the green "previous / next" buttons or click on the "Chapter 33" link to see a list of sections and to see legal notes about the statute, click the links on the left:

Illinois Legislation

The Illinois State Board of Education partners with school districts to provide programs and services for students with specialized educational needs.

Guidance and resources may be found on the ISBE Special Education Programs website.

On the site, you'll also find a distinct section for laws, regulation, and guidance.

If you want to view the Schools section of the Illinois statutes directly, you can do so here.

The Illinois Compiled Statutes may also be searched on Westlaw.

The U.S. Department of Education also shares IDEA-related documentation for each state: Illinois
