EndNote Basic

EndNote Basic is a web-based program that allows you to organize your sources (articles, books, images, etc.), cite the sources while you write a paper, and prepare bibliographies.

Transferring Sources from Zotero and Other Platforms

  1. Open Zotero
  2. Select Export Library... from the File menu
    OR
    Right click a collection and choose Export Collection...
  3. In the Export popup window, select the Export options 
    1. Choose RIS from the drop down menu
    2. Check which Translator Options you want
      Note: choosing Export Files will export any pdf documents but these will not be added as attachments to the Mendeley record
    3. If needed, change the Character Encoding setting (not typical)
    4. Click the OK button
  4. Navigate to where you want the file to be exported to
  5. Give the document a filename
  6. Click the Save button
    Depending on the size of your Library, this may take a few minutes
  7. Within EndNote Basic, choose the Collect tab and then click Import References
    1. Click the Browse button to select the RIS file
    2. Select RefMan RIS from the Import Option menu
    3. In the To: menu, select the group or New Group
    4. Click the Import button
      • If you selected New Group, a popup window will prompt you to give the group a name
    5. If the Import is successful, this message will appear: # references were imported into "group name" group.
  8. You can navigate to the group to view the sources

Note: To add PDF files to your sources records, see the Managing Attachments tab on the Organizing Sources page.

  1. Open the Mendeley Desktop app
  2. Select the All Documents folder (or a specific folder)
  3. Select all of the documents in the list
  4. From the File menu, choose Export...
  5. In the popup window,
    1. choose the location you want to save your file to
    2. Type in a filename
    3. Choose the export format RIS
      • BibTeX (*.bib) and EndNote XML (*.xml) are for other applications
  6. Within EndNote Basic, choose the Collect tab and then click Import References
    1. Click the Browse button to select the RIS file
    2. Select RefMan RIS from the Import Option menu
    3. In the To: menu, select the group or New Group
    4. Click the Import button
      • If you selected New Group, a popup window will prompt you to give the group a name
    5. If the Import is successful, this message will appear: # references were imported into "group name" group.
  7. You can navigate to the group to view the sources
