The Rayfield Archives has digitized and made available online all of the yearbooks for the university, University High School (U-High), and a number of yearbooks for the Thomas Metcalf School
For the university yearbooks, there have been three versions created throughout the university's history: The Index (1892-1972), the New Student Record (1975-1994), and the Graduate Student Record (1975-1993). The university yearbooks were digitized in 2012 with a grant from the Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries in Illinois (CARLI).
University High School began printing their own yearbooks in 1929. Prior to that, students at University High School were featured in The Index.
Digitized yearbooks for the Thomas Metcalf School cover 1975 to 2004, with the exception of a missing copy for the 1980-1981 school year.

In it's more than 160-year history, Illinois State University has been governed by six boards. The first, known as the Board of Education of the State of Illinois (1857-1917) established the university. With the passage of a state law called the Civil Administration Code, the board changed its name to the Normal School Board (1917-1936). In an effort to modernize, the board again changed its name in 1937 to the Teacher's College Board (1937-1965). The board changed its name again in 1965 to the Board of Governors of the State Colleges and Universities of the State of Illinois (1965-1967). This change only lasted two years with the board eventually changing their name to the Board of Regents (1967-1995). With the passage of state Senate bill 241 in 1995, the university established its own governing board, the Illinois State University Board of Trustees. Since 1995, all university governance matters are handled by an eight-member board, seven of which are appointed by the Governor and confirmed by the Illinois Senate. The eighth member is a university selected student.
