Zotero

This guide provides in-depth instructions on how to use Zotero, organize sources, and create in-text citations and bibliographies.

Removing the Zotero field codes from a document

Your in-text citations and references are dynamically linked to your personal Zotero Library. Because of this you will need to remove that connection before giving the document to another person like your professor or a journal editor.

  1. Open your Word document that is linked to Zotero
  2. Open the Zotero desktop app
  3. From the Zotero tab, click the Unlink Citations option
    unlink citations button

  4. Click OK to the warning message about removing field codes.

  5. From the File tab, select Save As… to save the new version of the document.
This preserves your Zotero version if you need to make revisions after submission.
Use filenames that clearly identify which document is the Zotero document and which one isn’t.
  6. Make any formatting adjustments you need to make.
  7. Submit the paper to your professor or the manuscript to your publisher or committee.
