This guide provides in-depth instructions on how to use Zotero, organize sources, and create in-text citations and bibliographies.

Creating and Managing Your Account / Profile

You do not need an online account to use the Zotero desktop app. However, having an online account allows you to sync your sources and then gives you access to them even if you aren't using your computer. Also, if you plan to use the Group/Sharing feature, an online account is required.

Creating an Account

  1. Go to the Zotero.org
  2. Click the Log In link in the upper right hand corner of the page
  3. Click the Register link in the upper right hand corner of the next page
  4. Complete the required fields, check the 'I am not a robot' box, and click Register
  5. Once your account is created, you can sync your desktop sources to your online account

Changing Your Password

  1. Go to the Zotero.org
  2. Click the Log In link in the upper right hand corner of the page
  3. Log into your account
  4. Click Settings in the upper right navigation
  5. On the Zotero Settings page, click the Account link
  6. Fill in the password fields and click the Change Password button

Changing Your E-Mail Address

  1. Go to the Zotero.org
  2. Click the Log In link in the upper right hand corner of the page
  3. Log into your account
  4. Click Settings in the upper right navigation
  5. On the Zotero Settings page, click the Account link
  6. Scroll down the page to the Manage Email Addresses section
  7. Add a new email address first and then delete your primary address OR change switch status of your addresses

Changing Your Profile Information

  1. Go to the Zotero.org
  2. Click the Log In link in the upper right hand corner of the page
  3. Log into your account
  4. Click Settings in the upper right navigation
  5. On the Zotero Settings page, click the Profile link
  6. Make changes to the provided fields and click the Change Profile button

Checking Storage Usage/Quota

  1. Go to the Zotero.org
  2. Click the Log In link in the upper right hand corner of the page
  3. Log into your account
  4. Click Settings in the upper right navigation
  5. On the Zotero Settings page, click the Storage link
    1. If you want, you can purchase more storage on the settings page
