Zotero

This guide provides in-depth instructions on how to use Zotero, organize sources, and create in-text citations and bibliographies.

Removing the Zotero field codes from a document

Your in-text citations and references are dynamically linked to your personal Zotero Library. Because of this you will need to remove that connection before giving the document to another person like your professor or a journal editor.

It is recommended you create copy of the document, so one is still connected with Zotero and the one you submit isn't. This allows you to make corrections and modifications to the original if needed.

  1. Open the Zotero desktop app
  2. Open the Word document you want to disconnect from your Zotero Library
  3. In the Zotero tab, click the Unlink Citations option
  4. unlink citations button

  5. Click OK to the warning message about removing field codes.
    unlink citations warning box

  6. From the File tab, select Save As… to save the new version of the document.
This preserves your Zotero version if you need to make revisions after submission.
Use filenames that clearly identify which document is the Zotero document and which one isn’t.
  7. Make any formatting adjustments you need to make.
  8. Submit the paper/manuscript to your professor, the Graduate School, your committee, or a publisher.
