Finding Songs in Anthologies

Questions arise at both the Floor 2 and Floor 6 reference desks about finding a song when the student knows the title of it.  To find songs, start with the Milner Library catalog advanced search.

  1. Change Everything to Library Catalog under Search for.
  2. Enter the name of the song in the search box, leave the first dropdown on Keyword, and change the second dropdown to contains exact phrase.
  3. Select Scores from the Material Type dropdown.
  4. Choose Search.

  5. In your search results list, you will usually find anthologies or collections of songs.  To make sure that the song a patron needs is in an anthology, select the title of the anthology and choose Details on the left or scroll down to view the Details section, and look for the song title next to Contents.

Finding Audio Files and CDs

At both Floor 2 and Floor 6 reference desks, patrons ask for CDs or audio files, or for CD inserts.  CD inserts are the information booklets found in the front covers of CD cases, and can be found by searching for CDs containing musicians, music types, or composers that patrons are researching.  The process for finding audio files and CDs is very similar to the one for finding music scores.  Start with the Milner Library catalog Advanced Search.

  1. Change Everything to Library Catalog next to Search for.
  2. Enter the composer's name in one box and select Author/Creator from the Keyword dropdown next to that box.
  3. Enter the type of music or specific name of a piece of music in the next box and leave the dropdown next to it set for Keyword.
  4. Change Material Type to Sound recordings. Choose Search.

The library offers many different audio formats including CDs, cassette tapes, vinyl LPs, and electronic audio files.

Piano Pedagogy Cabinet

The piano pedagogy cabinet is located in the workroom on Floor 2 against the left wall.  It contains music books used to help people learn how to play the piano.  The books are sorted into different holders based on the publisher or series they belong to, and each holder is clearly labeled.  The key to the cabinet is located in one of the lower slots on the handout rack in the back right corner of the workroom and is clearly labeled.  If students ask to use the piano pedagogy cabinet, take them to the workroom and unlock the cabinet for them so that they can use the materials in the confines of the workroom.  They may not take any materials out of the workroom.  When the students are done, make sure that the music books are put away in the cabinet and lock the cabinet. If you are not sure where the music books should be reshelved, contact Anne Shelley.
